Project Description:

Bechtel is designing, constructing and commissioning the world’s largest radioactive waste treatment plant for the U.S. Department of Energy at the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington state. The Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant will use vitrification technology to process and solidify 56 million gallons (210 million liters) of radioactive and chemical waste stored at the Hanford site, which is a byproduct of plutonium production during World War II and the Cold War era.

The project is the largest undertaking of its kind and one of DOE’s most technically challenging cleanup projects. Its construction spans 65 acres (26 hectares) with four major nuclear facilities Pretreatment, Low-Activity Waste Vitrification, High-Level Waste Vitrification and Analytical Laboratory as well as operations and maintenance buildings, utilities, other support facilities.

Position is located at the Construction Site (22 miles north of Richland) work a 4 x 10 schedule, Monday -Thursday, 6:30 am to 5:00 pm.

This position will be performed under the day-to-day direction, control, and supervision of WTCC.

Role Overview

Plans, writes, edits, proofreads, and coordinates the production of simple to moderately complex technical documents and other publication products with accuracy, consistency, professional quality, and conformance to appropriate style guide. Complexity is determined by technical terminology, length, scope, production methods, and client direction.

Principle responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Plans, writes, edits, proofreads, and coordinates the production of simple to moderately complex technical documents and other print and electronic media.

  • Plans format of documents, organizes content, writes/edits text, and provides instructions for final reproduction. Works online as required.

  • Interfaces with authors, subject matter experts, and publications staff while preparing and coordinating a full range of technical documentation.

  • Ensures that material is structured and formatted logically and resolves inconsistencies.

  • Performs substantive edits, writes original text, and works with technical authors to rewrite text.

  • Reviews document requirements (including content and schedule) with authors and provides guidance for successful and timely product completion. Works with authors to resolve editorial and/or content issues.

  • Recommends and coordinates additional document formatting, form/template development, and editorial support.

  • Monitors job progress and alerts responsible manager when schedules appear to be in jeopardy.

  • Maintains complex electronic file management and configuration control.

  • Assists other publications staff, as required.

  • Works overtime as required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor Degree in English, Journalism, Technical Communications or related publications field ; or in lieu of degree High School Diploma or equivalent and six years of related experience.

  • Must be able to demonstrate intermediate proficiency using Microsoft Word and Excel. A skills assessment will be administered to test proficiency.

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and proper use of syntax. A skills assessment will be administered to test proficiency.

  • Candidates must have the right to work and remain in the US without sponsorship.

  • Must be able to pass a drug screen and background check.

  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical examination.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to walk distances around the construction jobsite on gravel and walkways in inclement weather, e.g., heat, snow, rain.

  • Proficiency with standard document formatting/editing/production software, electronic comment incorporation, importing graphic files, formatting tables, and creating/applying templates

  • Experience performing online and traditional editing/proofreading tasks using appropriate methods

  • Basic vocabulary of the relevant technical disciplines

  • Knowledge of grammatical rules, spelling, composition, and style

  • Skilled at drafting simple to moderately complex technical documents and other publication products to produce a logical format and structure and to resolve inconsistencies

  • Ability to review, write, and edit content to professional standards while conforming to appropriate style guide and other document-related guides and procedures

  • Ability to identify and apply appropriate level of edit based on considerations such as customer expectations, audience, visibility, and project/corporate standards

  • Competence in handling simple assignments with moderate supervision and moderately complex publication assignments with close supervision

  • Ability to interface with authors, subject matter experts, senior managers, and publications staff while preparing and coordinating a full range of technical documentation and other publication products

  • Ability to work effectively within an electronic document management system

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Knowledge of current publication production methods

  • Good oral and written communication skills

  • Professional customer service skills

  • Ability to participate as a publications representative on multi-disciplined teams planning and executing large, multifunctional, and high-profile document assignments

  • Capable of functioning professionally, effectively, and efficiently in a fast-paced production environment

  • Ability to work overtime on short notice, as needed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with scientific/engineering principles and terminology related to engineering for nuclear facility components, systems, design, and operations

  • One year of editing experience producing authorization basis, nuclear safety, and proposal documentation

  • Understands trademark, copyright, and corporate identity standards and guidelines
