Bechtel is designing, constructing, and commissioning the world’s largest radioactive waste treatment plant for the U.S. Department of Energy at the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington State.

The Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant will use vitrification technology to process and solidify 56 million gallons (210 million liters) of radioactive and chemical waste stored at the Hanford site, which is a byproduct of plutonium production during World War II and the Cold War era.

The project is the largest undertaking of its kind and one of DOE’s most technically challenging cleanup projects. Its construction spans 65 acres (26 hectares) with four major nuclear facilities Pretreatment, Low-Activity Waste Vitrification, High-Level Waste Vitrification and Analytical Laboratory as well as operations and maintenance buildings, utilities, other support facilities.

This position is located at the Construction Site (22 miles north of Richland) and works a 4 x 10 schedule, M-Th, 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Selected applicant needs to be able and willing to work weekends as needed.

The Waste Treatment Completion Company (WTCC) is a limited liability corporation created by Bechtel National Inc. (BNI) and AECOM. WTCC is a subcontractor to BNI, the prime contractor, to deliver the construction, turnover, startup, and commissioning activities for the WTP project.

Role Overview

Support the plant start-up and commissioning process, managing assigned commissioning activities and coordinating activities between the control room and other disciplines within the startup organization.

Principle responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Coordinate startup activities between startup and control room personnel to ensure safe operate of facility equipment, consistent with applicable procedures, standards, codes, regulations and equipment limitations;

  • Provide technical assistance to personnel will operate facility systems and equipment.

  • Provide OJT training to operations personnel during startup;

  • Provide input to detailed startup planning of project startup activities;

  • Perform other duties as directed in support of project activities.

  • Work hours as required, including rotating shifts, overtime, weekends and holidays as necessary to support the project;

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree from an accredited university in related field and 6 years related experience in startup/operations; in lieu of a formal degree, high school diploma or equivalent and 12 years of related experience in startup/operations.

  • A minimum 5 years of experience in startup/commissioning/operations of government or industrial facility, to include startup testing, maintenance, and/or plant operation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be able to clear a pre-employment drug screen, background check, and physical.

  • Previous commercial nuclear, Department of Energy, or plant operations experience.

  • In-depth knowledge in the areas of system operations from DCS system and knowledge of principles and practices related to sound operation.

  • Good knowledge of related construction and engineering practices and the economics involved.

  • Knowledge of industry and regulatory standards, and design criteria.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possess the legal right to work and remain in the US without sponsorship.

  • Previous experience as a Bechtel Startup (Commissioning) Engineer scheduling and performing system checkout and operation, with experience and knowledge of Bechtel Startup procedures, programs, and processes.

  • Previous commercial nuclear/Department of Energy experience.
