Bechtel is designing, constructing, and commissioning the world’s largest radioactive-waste treatment plant for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in southeastern Washington State. The project will use vitrification technology to process and stabilize 56 million gallons (212 million liters) of radioactive and chemical waste stored at the Hanford Site which is a byproduct of plutonium-production during World War II and the Cold War era.

The cleanup project is one of DOE’s most technically challenging and the largest undertaking of its kind—equivalent to building two nuclear power plants. The construction site spans 65 acres (26 hectares) and includes facilities for pretreatment, low-activity waste vitrification, and high-level waste vitrification, as well as an analytical laboratory.

Positions located at the Construction Site (22 miles north of Richland) work a 4 x 10 schedule, M-Th, 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. All other work locations (Richland WA, San Francisco CA and Reston VA) work a 9-80’s schedule, M-F 7:00 am to 4:30 pm with alternating Fridays off.

Senior Controls Systems Engineer to support Plant Installed Software lifecycle activities in the Richland, WA office. As part of the Plant Installed Software team, a senior engineer reviews and coordinates documents with suppliers, other disciplines, and customers. Coordinates technical issues with Engineering, Startup, and Plant Engineering. Interfaces with Quality Assurance. Proficient with basic engineering deliverables such as drawings, specifications, and Plant Installed Software lifecycle documentation. Proficient with the development of Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) and the development of control strategies. Proficient with process control algorithms and proficient with DCS/PLC database programs. Knowledgeable of major regulations and industry codes and standards applicable to instrumentation, control systems, and Plant Installed Software. Properly interprets and applies codes & standards and customer design requirements in the preparation of Control Systems design products and Plant Installed Software lifecycle documentation. Documents requirements for Plant Installed Software. Prepare software design documents to implement the software requirements. Develop and conduct test plans to validate implemented software. Achieves work process improvement and promotes continuous work process improvement. The Engineer shall champion non-proprietary electronic data interchange and integrate automation technology where ever practical. Demonstrate leadership qualities with emphasis on continuous improvement and team building, and interpersonal communication skills.

Basic Requirements:

  • BS degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Computer, Electro-Mech, or Software engineering with 9 year of relevant experience; or MS degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Computer, Electro-Mech, or Software engineering with 7 years of relevant engineering experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Eligible Foreign National applicants must possess a US Government issued Green Card and successfully go through a government screening process.

  • Familiar with design of nuclear facilities.

  • Distributed Control System (DCS)/Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) configurations experience.

  • Familiar with design of Safety Instrumented Systems

  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft office programs and other computer programs.

  • Candidate has excellent written and oral communication abilities along with effective presentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ABB 800xA Programming experience

  • Safety Instrumented Systems design experience

  • Previous Bechtel and/or DOD or DOE project experience

  • Experience implementing DOE Std. 1195 and ISA S84

  • Skilled in the use of Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, Access and PowerPoint
