Sydney Communications Manager
Fixed term: 12 months
This role requires someone to lay the foundations of a communications and public affairs plan for Bechtel in Sydney in the context of the wider country and region; developing a strategic, measured approach to Bechtel’s communications, public relations and marketing, including stakeholder outreach and communications, related to business development objectives.
Responsible for leading the development of a communication strategy for Bechtel Infrastructure in Sydney. Executes media (traditional and social) interaction and engagement. Identifies potential news stories and knows where and how to place them.
Support project and business development in the region through developing contacts and a strategic communications programme.
Build community outreach and related activities in conjunction with Bechtel Infrastructure public affairs objectives.
Tracks and develops responses to, and advises senior management on, public affairs and media issues management.
Executes communications tactics in support of business development strategy.
Researches and writes press releases, articles and other content as required for presentation to the media on Bechtel projects, personnel, technical innovations and new projects.
Develops and coordinates crisis communications strategies and activities.
Manages and prepares content for Bechtel’s principal communication vehicles.
Reports to and receives operational direction from Head of Corporate Affairs and Market Communications, Infrastructure on a functional basis, day-to-day responsibility to Sydney General Manager.
Supports the Regional General Manager with their communications requirements.
Provides operational management of designated communications programs and support to project and business development colleagues.
Develops and supports media and public affairs campaign in the region
Builds contact with media representatives and industry, government, civic, and public interest organizations to provide information and develop contacts linked to current project and future projects
Maintains contact with customer counterpart to align messages and coordinate approvals per the respective contracts or partnering agreements
Works with colleagues and projects to identify communications opportunities and issues, locally and nationally and to deliver press releases, marketing collateral, briefings and events.
Works in conjunction with colleagues in Bechtel Corporate and across other business units.
Extensive knowledge of communications and public affairs strategy in a business environment.
Familiarity, expertise, contacts, and acumen about media relations in Australia and preferably wider region.
Familiarity with news media processes and experience in media relations in the respective country or region.
Skill in oral and written communication across multiple channels, print and electronic.
Infrastructure, transport or power journalism, communications or public affairs experience preferred.
Several years of experience in a corporate communications position with a proven track record in supporting strategic corporate and marketing communications
Strong team orientation and ability to work in a matrixed organization
Ability to work closely with senior executives to support and coordinate effectively across organizational lines
Expert analytical and strategic planning skills, able to define project goals and deliverables and implement key program on time and within budget
Excellent judgment; heightened sense of personal and corporate ethics
